How did you find out about CrossFit/CrossFit Fishers?

I was looking for a new workout regimen and I have a friend who owns a CrossFit box in Johnson County. He told me about all of the benefits and hearing his passion for it made me want to give it a try. So I Googled “CrossFit in Fishers” and I found CrossFit Fishers, and the rest is history.

Favorite CrossFit WOD/Lift: Double unders and deadlifts.

Least Favorite CrossFit WOD/Lift: Thrusters…hands down my least favorite.

Favorite Paleo Meal: Bacon wrapped filet with broccoli and sweet potato.

Favorite Cheat Meal: Any type of pizza and Hot Box Breadsticks with cheese dip.

I have always wanted to… Be a professional athlete, but since that’s not going to happen I’ll go with vist Italy.

Outside the Gym I like to… Spend time with my family, play basketball with my 2 1/2 year old, relax in the winter and be outside in the spring and summer.

How has CrossFit impacted your life/what changes have you seen in yourself since starting?

CrossFit has allowed me to get in the best shape I’ve been in since my college days of playing basketball in relatively short time…I can only imagine what another few months will do. I have more energy after my daily 6 AM workouts, and I’m getting up earlier than I would have been in the past. CrossFit has introduced me to a new way of thinking when it comes to nutrition (Paleo and the Zone). And finally CrossFit has made me challenge myself mentally and learn how to silence that voice in my head that tells me I can’t lift a weight, or keep going late in a WOD.

Proudest accomplishment inside/outside of CrossFit:

Inside CrossFit my greatest accomplishment has been beginning to RX WODs and seeing my performance improve…a close second is getting the compliment from my wife that I’m looking the best I’ve ever looked.

3 Month Fitness Goal(s)

Compete in the CrossFit Games Open and consistently RX’ng

6 Month Fitness Goal(s)

Be able to do a muscle up and handstand pushups

Advice for Newbie’s:

Don’t get caught up trying to keep up with everyone who has been doing it for awhile. Take the time to learn from Pam and Troy to get the proper form and ease into increasing the weight you are lifting. It’s tough not to get competitive, but you may end up hurting yourself. It’ll become obvious quickly that Pam and Troy know what they are talking about, so listen to them. Oh, and be careful….it’s addicting!!!

How has CrossFit impacted your life/what changes have you seen in yourself since starting?
As a former collegiate athlete with a powerlifting background, much if not all of my form was broken down and rebuilt properly by Troy and Pam.  Crossfit’s competitive environment allows me to compete with myself and others on a daily basis.  I feel that I am in great physical condition and have actually shed much unwanted weight throughout recent months.

Proudest accomplishment inside/outside of CrossFit:
As a linebacker for Indiana University, my proudest accomplishment was receiving the Ted Verlihay Award for Leadership and Mental Attitude.  Through CrossFit my proudest accomplishments have been obtaining various PR’s in various lifts, surpassing those from my glory days in college.

3 Month Fitness Goal(s)
Participating in the CrossFit Games Open
Qualifying for Regionals

6 Month Fitness Goal(s)
Compete in various competitions throughout the spring/summer months

Advice for Newbie’s:

Be Teachable!  CrossFit is different from any workout regimen that I’ve ever been a part of and therefore much of my form and bad habits have had to be rebuilt.  Attempting to move weight that you aren’t prepared for could/will lead to injury and set-backs.  Allow Pam and Troy to dissect your form and your performance and numbers will increase.  Uncomfortable will become comfortable.

Find out about CFF?    I had several friends that wanted to try out CrossFit for their triathlon “off season” training.  We tried out a couple different boxes before hearing about CFF from a friend.  She had gone to Fishers and swore it would be the best fit for us.  She was right!

Favorite WOD-  I’m not sure I have a “favorite”, but I prefer the WODS that involve chippers of body weight exercises.  EX: sit ups, pull ups, air squats, burpees.  I may be the only person that likes burpees.  I can RX burpees though!

Least Favorite WOD-  SNATCHES!  Not exactly a strong point for me, although I’m working on it.

Favorite Paleo Meal  Steak, mushrooms and a sweet potato made at home

Favorite Cheat Meal-  Definitely donuts!  Or ice cream……definitely either donuts or ice cream

I have always wanted to… be stronger…..any activity that I have wanted to try, I try….but it would just be great to have more confidence and strength while doing it.

Outside the gym……I enjoy being outside, i.e.; biking, swimming, kayaking.  In reality though,  I am usually doing a house project or working in the yard.

Impacted my life-   I definitely can tell I’m stronger physically and more confident in trying new activities.  I assume everything will be easier now that I crossfit, and for the most part it definitely is!

Proudest accomplishment-  Losing 10+ lbs and winning my first Paleo challenge at the gym was awesome!  I feel better and healthier eating a cleaner diet.   A very close second would have to be losing the band on my pull ups.  It took six months, but I can finally get my chin over the bar without assistance.  That was definitely something I thought would never happen!

In 10 years,- I   Plan on being stronger and faster than I am now.

Advice for newbie’s-   Keep track of the weight/benchline WOD’s and dates so when you are having a rough day, you can look back and remember the time when you couldn’t even lift the “pink” bar.

How has CrossFit impacted your life/what changes have you seen in yourself since starting? Other than the weight loss and eating a better diet, I enjoy less stressed out moments and I feel stronger.

Proudest accomplishment: Just getting to put weight on the bar is an accomplishment to me.

In 10 years, I… want to enjoy an active lifestyle.  I will continue to feel strong and healthy, keep up with my kids.

Advice for Newbie’s: make stretching just as important as the workout, get to the gym, It’s the hardest part.

John Tan

How did you find out about CrossFit/CF Fishers? I found out about CrossFit from the internet and searched for CrossFit Fishers on Google.

Favorite WOD/Lift:  I enjoy strength WODs specially CrossFit Total.

Least Favorite WOD/Lift:  Probably front squats.

Favorite Cheat meal:  Ice Cream

I have always wanted to…  Take part in some sort of physical competition like MMA fight, Triathlon, Ironman competition or something like that.

Outside the Gym I like to… Watch TV, play video games

How has CrossFit impacted your life/what changes have you seen in yourself since starting? I have become stronger, faster; I jump higher and don’t get tired.

Proudest accomplishment:  In CrossFit, I think it was doing 100 pull-ups in on WOD.

In 10 years, I… would like to be fitter than I am now.

Advice for Newbie’s:  Don’t give up; don’t stop pushing it to the limit.  The improvements come faster than you would expect.
